She Would Sit Knitting
While We Swam

Pamela King Kearns

Spent my childhood summers there, my mother would save the sixpence to get in and would bring the neighbours children too, she would sit knitting while we swam, even if the weather was cold.

My brother was taught to swim by the instructor, he still remembers the weather turned just as my mother signed him up.He would beg not to go as it was so cold. My mother would say ‘sure we will see when we get there’. He’s the best swimmer of the three of us.

I loved the shower in the middle of one of the smaller pools. The ‘baby’ pool was always the warmest! I still remember the odd bit of seaweed getting in, and the seaweed baths! Never had one though!
